DIY Modular in a Week: designing a power bus board, with a crash course in EasyEDA, JLCPCB and LCSC

Kristian Blåsol

A Swedish YouTuber whose DIY Modular in a Week series builds a complete modular system from scratch: case, power, cables, bus boards and modules, with clear explanations of each step. His power cable video is also on our power cables page.

Music Thing Modular – Tom Whitwell

Designer of famous open-source DIY modules such as the Turing Machine (a random looping sequencer) and the Workshop System, a small complete modular built at workshops around the world. All designs are open source, so they are great for learning how real modules are made.

Kit makers by difficulty

Where to find kits that match your skills. "Full kit" means every part is included; "PCB + panel" means you order the components yourself from the BOM.

Level Maker / source What they offer Notes
Beginner Erica Synths EDU DIY Full kits Through-hole; based on Moritz Klein's videos, so you learn how each circuit works
Beginner Befaco DIY Full kits, some with SMD parts pre-soldered Many also exist in VCV Rack: try first, solder later
Intermediate Music Thing Modular Full kits via resellers; open-source files Turing Machine and expanders; Workshop System at workshops
Intermediate DIY shops such as Thonk Kits from many small designers Each kit lists its difficulty; read the build guide before buying
Advanced Mutable Instruments (open source) Files only: PCB, BOM, firmware Fine-pitch SMD and firmware flashing; see BOM for a worked example
Advanced Westlicht PER|FORMER Files and iBOM A large SMD sequencer with an STM32 and display

Workshops and events in the Netherlands and nearby

Building together is the fastest way to learn. Keep an eye on these places:

  • WORM, Rotterdam: hosts the yearly Dutch Modularfest (live sets, workshops, a DIY area and a makers' market) and build workshops, such as the Music Thing Modular Workshop System build led by Tom Whitwell in March 2026. worm.org
  • Volt Music Store, Rotterdam: synth workshops and demos in its showroom from time to time.
  • Superbooth, Berlin: the big yearly modular fair every May, with a DIY area. In the same week, the Berlin Modular Society's DIY Kit Day offers a day of soldering kits together.
  • Your local hackerspace or makerspace: many have soldering evenings where you can bring your kit and get help.
